Mahanakhon Green Energy (MHG) Lays Foundation Stone for Three New RDF Waste-to-Energy Power Plants
Mahanakhon Green Energy Co., Ltd. (MHG), under the supervision of Eastern Energy Plus Co., Ltd. (EEP), has commenced the construction of three new waste-to-energy power plants. This marks another step forward in its mission to become a leader in sustainable municipal waste management by converting waste into community- and environmentally-friendly electricity.
MHG, a subsidiary of EEP, has been granted a private sector concession to manage municipal solid waste (MSW) and develop three RDF waste-to-energy power plant projects in collaboration with Phraeksa Mai Municipality. The foundation stone laying ceremony will be held for:
- One RDF waste-to-energy power plant with a capacity of 9.9 MW
- Two RDF waste-to-energy power plants, each with a capacity of 3.3 MW
This expansion significantly increases electricity production capacity beyond the existing 9.9 MW RDF power plant, which has already begun commercial operations (COD) with the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) in Phraeksa Mai, Samut Prakan. The company is committed to ensuring all power generation operations comply with government standards.
Waste-to-Energy: A Sustainable Solution for the Growing Waste Crisis
The transition to waste-to-energy (WTE) is crucial in addressing Thailand’s mounting waste crisis. According to the Pollution Control Department, Thailand generated 26.95 million tons of municipal solid waste in 2023, with a waste generation rate of 1.12 kg per person per day. This amount is expected to rise annually, making effective waste management a pressing national concern.
As a pioneer in integrated and eco-friendly municipal waste management, EEP follows the 360-degree waste management approach, led by CEO Mr. Abinash Majhi. This strategy includes:
- Semi-Aerobic Landfill Technology: Installing gas ventilation pipes and using soil-like cover materials with plastic sheets to reduce methane emissions and mitigate greenhouse gas impacts.
- Odor Impact Monitoring with E-Nose Technology: Deploying four online odor monitoring stations around the landfill site, allowing 24/7 real-time tracking of odor intensity, which the public can access.
Towards a “Zero Waste, Zero Landfill” Future
EEP remains committed to its “Zero Waste, Zero Landfill” vision—ensuring that all waste is either recycled, repurposed, or converted into energy, leaving no residual waste. To advance this goal, three additional RDF power plants are being developed under MHG’s management. These facilities will enhance energy security while promoting sustainable and environmentally friendly waste management.
This initiative has received strong support from Samut Prakan Province, Phraeksa Mai Municipality, and various governmental agencies, ensuring its successful implementation.
